Description
The Cathedral of St. Ursus (including Cathedral of St. Ursus and Victor ) is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Basel in the town of Solothurn , Switzerland .
The cathedral is designed as a cross basilica. It has a pre-and three Volljoche in the nave. The choir, as well as the two transepts are complete semicircle. In the excessive crossing there is a circle tambour with dome and lantern.
The building is located on an artificially enlarged and elevated terrace in the old town of Solothurn.
The west facade is also the main facade of the cathedral. She is running two floors and the ground floor divided into three parts. The middle part is faced with a pillar of strength. Upstream is a monumental staircase that forms the eastern end of the main street (Market Street) of Solothurn with its two wells. It has three times 11 steps, with the lowest 11 levels are designed to be narrower to the side to give the two wells with the necessary space. This was done because the forecourt drops to Aare back and as a central fountain would have required two unequal side stairs.
