Vineyard in Neuchatel
We make a trip in Neuchatel region (Switzerland) in later Springtime this year. Aside from the road they are some vineyards, a very nice painting subject.
I made some photos and later a sketch after one of them, which remains as special for me. So was born the idea for this painting of mine.

The three lakes region, located at the foothill of the Jura (Switzerland), runs alongside the Lakes of Neuchatel, of Bienne and of Morat and comprises French-speaking cantons, as well as German-speaking ones. This situation permits the co-existence of very different cultures which are reflected in the diversification of the regions wines: sometimes severe, even austere, and sometimes sparkling with lifelike joy!

Neuchatel is one of the smaller wine regions of Switzerland, located in the French-speaking western half of the country, just the other side of the Jura Mountains from Arbois in the French Jura. The region is generally referred to as the 'Three Lakes' and its vineyards are indeed centered around the western Swiss lakes: de Morat de Bienne and de Neuchatel. The latter area is by far the most productive of the three, with its northern banks producing more than 60% of the region's wine in every vintage.

The ancient calcareous soils around Neuchatel are not dissimilar to those of Chateau Chalon, 60 miles (100km) to the west in France. These two traditional wine communes share another interesting characteristic, namely the quality-focused attitude of their winemakers. Chateau Chalon's producers still voluntarily restrict use of their appellation title in poor vintages and Neuchatel was the first Swiss region to impose yield restrictions on its vineyards.

The climate here is moderated significantly by the presence of the three lakes, which prevent summer temperatures from rising dramatically and also dampen the effects of frost and snow in winter. Neuchatel has about-average rainfall of around 39 inches (1000mm) per year. Because it is not quite as warm as Geneva, nor as reliably sunny as the central Valais, vineyard location is important. To maximize the vines' exposure to sunshine, they are mostly planted on the northern banks of the lakes, where the south-easterly aspect brings them warming rays all through the morning and early afternoon. There are some vines on the southern side of Lake Neuchatel, around the lakeside town of Cheyres, but even these are planted on relatively sunny, well-angled slopes.
