Description
End of September, this year, I took this photograph at Landhut castle in Utzensdorf, Bern. The special tones of these two Autumn sumac trees are giving a special look to the Autumn!
Landshut Castle is a castle in the municipality of Utzenstorf of the Canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
While there may have been an earlier Burgandian castle, Landshut Castle was probably built in the second half of the 12th century for the Dukes of Zaehringen. It was the seat of the Lords of Uzansdorf who ruled from 1175 until 1323. Under the Dukes, Landshut Castle was the administrative center of the leadership or township of Utzenstorf. When the Zhringen line died out, the Amt was inherited by the Counts of Kyburg.
Under the Counts of Kyburg, the castle was expanded and renovated in the 12th century. It was first called Landeshuothe in 1253.
During the Gmmenen war in 1332, the castle was attacked by troops from Bern and Solothurn and destroyed. It was rebuilt shortly thereafter. At the end of the 14th century, the Kyburgs were forced to pawn the castle and the Amt. It was acquired by Rudolf von Ringoltingen from Bern.
In 1624-30 the castle was rebuilt on the old foundations. In 1812 the city of Bern sold the castle and estates to Rudolf Niklaus von Wattenwyl.
It passed through several owners until 1925 when the Rtimeyer in Alexandria family bought the estate. They held it until 1958 when it was sold back to the Canton of Bern. In 1988 a foundation acquired the castle, redecorated it to match the style of the 17th century and converted part of it into a museum.
Today it is the home of the Schweizer Museum fr Wild und Jagd (Swiss museum of Wildlife and Hunting).
Trees, streams and Botany
The 4.5 hectare castle park is open all year round freely accessible. The oldest trees, like the castle on the capping plane group, the large oak tree at the pond edge or Nordmann fir in the northern part of the park are 200 years old. The impressive collection includes tree next to full-blown native oak, ash, lime, beech and maple trees and rare shrubs foreign origin. Thus in autumn golden yellow coloring girl hair tree, Ginkgo biloba from China and the moisture-loving bald cypress, Taxodium distichum comes from the United States.
Water
In addition to the trees, the water shapes the park in the style of an English landscape garden. The two clear streams, spring groundwater sources in Emmen Schachen. Individual thresholds, side arms and connecting channels ensure the uniform supply of the annular castle pond. A three-part waterfall sets acoustic accents. Remains of an old water distribution system in the southwest of the park are witnesses of past water use.
A walk through the park Landshut is an experience in every season. Botanically interested visitors will find on trees and large shrubs signs with German names, botanical names and home information.
